South Africa’s public health facilities recorded 1,448 births on New Year’s Day 2025, a decline from the 1,703 births reported on the same day last year, the Department of Health announced.
In its statement, the department highlighted a significant drop in the number of teen mothers, from 190 in 2024 to just over 80 in 2025. The department emphasized the need for continued societal efforts to address teenage pregnancy.
“Teenage pregnancy often results in irregular school attendance, poor academic performance, and school dropout, especially for mothers who lack family support to care for their babies,” the department noted.
The government is working with the Departments of Social Development and Basic Education to support mothers through existing programs, ensuring their babies not only survive but thrive.
Provincial Breakdown of Births
Gauteng recorded the highest number of births, with 387, followed by Eastern Cape (219) and Limpopo (191).
