Operation Vala Umgodi Leads to Three Arrests for Illegal Mining

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested three suspects, aged between 22 and 37, for alleged illegal mining activities following an intelligence-led operation in Ermelo, Mpumalanga.

The arrests were made on 12 December 2024 as part of Operation Vala Umgodi, a coordinated effort to combat illicit mining. Police received intelligence regarding illegal mining activities near a local country club in Ermelo. Acting on this information, officers planned and executed a successful operation in the identified area.

Upon approaching the site, some suspected illegal miners attempted to flee, with reports indicating that some were armed. According to police, the situation escalated when certain individuals opened fire on law enforcement officers. The police responded, resulting in one suspect being fatally wounded. A firearm was recovered from the scene near the deceased individual.

During the operation, three suspects were apprehended, while others managed to evade arrest.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation. Given that SAPS members were involved, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will conduct an independent inquiry into the incident.

The three arrested suspects are scheduled to appear at Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on 17 December 2024, where they will face charges related to illegal mining activities.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the arrests and reaffirmed SAPS’ commitment to intensifying efforts against illegal mining. He emphasised that operations like Vala Umgodi will continue to ensure police visibility and combat illegal activities in high-risk areas.

“We are determined to root out illegal mining and ensure that offenders are brought to book. Through operations like this, we aim to disrupt the operations of those who engage in these unlawful practices,” Major General Mkhwanazi stated.

Operation Vala Umgodi forms part of SAPS’ broader strategy to tackle illegal mining, which remains a significant concern in Mpumalanga and other provinces across South Africa.
