President Ramaphosa Hosts German President for Working Visit in Pretoria

President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to host President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany for a working visit at Mahlamba Ndlopfu, the official residence of the South African President in Pretoria.

Celebrating Historic Milestones

The visit marks two significant anniversaries:

  • The 30th anniversary of democracy in South Africa, reflecting three decades of freedom and governance reform since the end of apartheid.
  • The 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, symbolizing the end of division in Germany and the broader transition to democracy in Europe.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

According to the Presidency, the leaders will discuss various topics of mutual interest to enhance the strategic partnership between South Africa and Germany.

Germany is a key partner for South Africa, being:

  • The third largest market for South African exports.
  • A top source of overseas tourists.
  • A significant investor and development partner.

The working visit is expected to bolster economic and diplomatic ties while fostering closer cooperation.

Focus on Economic Collaboration

President Steinmeier is accompanied by a delegation of 10 German CEOs. The group will participate in a business roundtable on December 13, aimed at exploring new opportunities for economic collaboration between the two nations.

Honoring South African Heritage

In addition to diplomatic discussions, President Steinmeier will pay tribute to South African heritage by laying a wreath at Freedom Park, a site dedicated to the country’s struggle for freedom and democracy.

Regional Engagement

Steinmeier’s visit to South Africa follows a three-day state visit to Nigeria. After his engagements in Pretoria, he will travel to Lesotho on December 14 before returning to South Africa for his onward journey to Germany.

This visit underscores the enduring and multifaceted relationship between South Africa and Germany, emphasizing shared values, historical connections, and a commitment to collaboration on global challenges.
