A Somalian national, Aklilu Eliasi, has been remanded in custody following his brief appearance in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on 18 November.
Eliasi faces charges of possession of a firearm without a licence or permit. His next court appearance is scheduled for 22 November.
Arrest During Festive Season Operation
The accused was arrested on Sunday, 17 November, during Operation Safer Festive Season. Members of the Middelburg Flying Squad stopped a Nissan NP200 for a routine patrol check on the R35 road to Bethal.
Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered a revolver loaded with five live rounds. According to Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the provincial police spokesperson, Eliasi failed to produce a firearm licence.
“The accused failed to provide a firearm licence, which led to his arrest. The firearm was confiscated for further investigation, and ballistic testing will be conducted to determine whether it was used in the commission of any other crimes,” Mdhluli explained.
Investigation Underway
Police have indicated that the investigation is ongoing and have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges being brought against the accused.
“The firearm’s history is being traced, and further developments may arise from the investigation,” said Mdhluli.
Safer Festive Season Campaign
The arrest forms part of Operation Safer Festive Season, a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing crime and ensuring public safety during the holiday period. Law enforcement agencies have intensified patrols, vehicle checks, and crime prevention measures across various provinces.
