CPF Executive Member Arrested for Defeating the Ends of Justice

A 36-year-old Community Policing Forum (CPF) executive member in Bushbuckridge was arrested for defeating the ends of justice after allegedly tampering with a crime scene on 14 September 2024 in Shatale, Bushbuckridge.

According to reports, three suspects attacked a family, fatally shooting a 35-year-old woman and injuring three other family members. One of the injured fought back and disarmed one of the assailants. During the struggle, a shot went off, hitting the attacker.

Neighbours, including the CPF member, rushed to assist. However, the CPF member allegedly took the firearm and left the scene while others secured the suspect. He later returned without the weapon.

Police from Operation Shanela were called to the scene, and after initial questioning, the CPF member led them to where the firearm had been hidden. Both the CPF member and the assailant were arrested. The injured assailant is under police guard in the hospital.

A manhunt has been launched for the other two suspects, who fled in a Toyota Hilux without registration plates. Police intercepted the vehicle, but the suspects escaped on foot, reportedly carrying firearms. A firearm with police insignia and altered serial numbers was recovered, along with 28 spent cartridges from the scene.

Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, condemned the incident, stating, “We cannot work with wolves in sheep’s clothing. We will remove all the rotten potatoes from the system and work with people dedicated to serving our communities.” He emphasised that the investigation into the CPF member’s actions will be impartial and thorough.

Court Appearance

The suspect, Kgotatso Mathebula, appeared before the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court today on charges of defeating the ends of justice and possessing an unlawful firearm. He was remanded in custody until 19 September 2024, when he is scheduled for a bail application hearing.
