The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has strongly condemned the brutal rape of a 90-year-old woman in Morgenzon during the early hours of Sunday, 01 September 2024. The victim was attacked while asleep in her home, with reports indicating that the 20-year-old suspect is known to the victim’s family, adding to the horror of this tragic incident.
Upon receiving the report, the SAPS members from Morgenzon swiftly acted, successfully tracking down and apprehending the suspect shortly after the incident. The suspect has been charged and is expected to appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on, 02 September 2024, facing a charge of rape.
Major General Mkhwanazi urged the public to allow the police to conduct a thorough investigation in the pursuit of justice for the victim. “Such acts of violence against vulnerable members of our society, particularly our elderly, are disgraceful and will not be tolerated. We commend our officers for their prompt action in ensuring that the suspect is brought to justice. The SAPS is committed to prioritizing the safety and well-being of our citizens, and the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit will ensure a comprehensive investigation is conducted,” said the General.
He further emphasized the importance of cooperation between the police and the community in protecting vulnerable individuals and holding perpetrators accountable. “Together, we can work towards creating a safer environment for all,” Mkhwanazi concluded.
