September 2, 2024Three Suspects Shot, One Dead, Two Injured in Shootout with SAPS in Extortion Investigation
In a critical operation conducted by the SAPS in Mpumalanga, three suspects were shot, one fatally, in a confrontation with police officers investigating cases of extortion, attempted murder, and related crimes. The incident occurred on, 02 September 2024, in Kwagga A, Kwaggafontein, where a group of suspects had gathered.
The operation was launched based on intelligence reports that led officers to the suspects’ location. Upon arrival, the suspects opened fire on the police, prompting the officers to return fire in self-defense. As a result, one suspect was killed, and two others were injured and subsequently arrested. The injured suspects are currently under police guard while receiving medical treatment at a hospital. Fortunately, no SAPS members were injured during the shootout.
A fourth suspect managed to flee the scene and is believed to have sustained injuries during the exchange. The SAPS has activated a 72-hour plan involving all relevant stakeholders to track down the escaped suspect.
The SAPS is urging hospital staff and other medical personnel to be vigilant and report any individuals seeking treatment for gunshot wounds or injuries that may be related to the incident.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, issued a strong warning against those involved in criminal activities in the province. “We will not tolerate any acts of violence or intimidation, and we will vigorously pursue those who threaten the well-being of our citizens. We urge community members to provide any information that could assist in apprehending the suspect still at large. We commend our officers for their bravery and dedication to upholding the law. Together, we can ensure that our communities remain safe and secure,” said Major General Mkhwanazi.
