The unrelenting heatwave gripping multiple provinces across South Africa has sparked water
shortages, leaving residents grappling with the scorching temperatures. The South African
Weather Services (SAWS) issued a warning on Monday, cautioning that extremely high
temperatures peaking at 37 degrees Celsius would persist until Tuesday in areas like
Gauteng, Northern and Eastern Cape, North West, Limpopo, Free State, and KwaZulu-
Natal.
In Limpopo, municipal authorities have attributed the water scarcity in and around
Polokwane to the intense heatwave. Municipal Spokesperson Thipa Selala stated,
“Polokwane Municipality is facing an unprecedented water shortage due to persistently high
temperatures. Reservoirs have dropped to their lowest, with some sitting at 0%. Polokwane
Municipality urgently appeals to everyone to join hands in conserving water: use water
sparingly let us work together to ensure that everyone has water.”
The situation is equally dire in Randburg, north of Johannesburg, where some residents
remain without water, exacerbating their struggle to cope with the scorching heat. Joburg
EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and
avoiding direct sunlight, warning, “Residents are urged to stay hydrated and drink lots of
water. Try and avoid direct sunlight. Those working directly in the sunlight take regular
breaks. Exposure to these extreme temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion, heat cramps,
exposure to extremely high temperatures can lead to heat stroke.”
As the heatwave persists, authorities continue to urge residents to conserve water and take
necessary precautions to mitigate the adverse effects of the unrelenting heat.
