Empowering the Disabled Community in Schoemansdal

The theme “Nothing About Us Without Us” took centre stage yesterday as the
Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) hosted an impactful
disability workshop at the Sizimisile Disabled Center in Schoemansdal.

Attended by physically and mentally disabled persons from the local community, the
workshop aimed to educate and spread awareness about disabilities as well as
government programs available to support the disabled population.

Led by the DCSSL with backing from the Mpumalanga Provincial Treasury, the event
allowed disabled individuals to learn about their rights and have their voices heard. The
Disability Charter, which focuses on enhancing rights knowledge for the disabled, was
welcomed by the Sizimisile Disabled Center.

In addition to the educational workshop, the DCSSL provided the centre with grocery
donations in a show of good faith. The donations helped meet tangible needs to
empower the centre.

Days like yesterday reaffirm that the disabled community must be included in any
conversation about them. “Nothing About Us Without Us” appropriately captured the
spirit of empowerment and advocacy promoted at this impactful event. With more
initiatives like this, real positive change is possible.
