Six killed in Free State bus tragedy

A horrific bus accident in Free State province has claimed the lives of six learners. The bus was transporting learners home from an outdoor school event when it overturned on the R70 highway between Senekal and Ventersburg on Tuesday.

Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga expressed her deepest condolences to the families and community impacted by this “sad tragedy.” 28 other students sustained minor injuries, with six hospitalized in serious condition.

It is believed a detached tyre caused the driver to lose control before the crash. However, authorities are still investigating the exact cause. Crash investigators have been deployed to analyze all factors surrounding the accident.

Minister Chikunga promised a thorough and speedy investigation “to allow all affected to find closure.” The school community is mourning the loss of the six students killed so soon after the start of the academic year. The nation’s thoughts are with the grieving families during this difficult time.
