Tourism Soars in South Africa

South Africa’s Tourism Momentum Continues in 2024
Pretoria, South Africa – South Africa’s tourism sector continues its strong recovery,
according to new data from Statistics South Africa. International tourist arrivals from
January to December 2023 totaled 8.5 million, a 48.9% increase over the same period
in 2022.

The African continent remains the largest source of visitors, accounting for 75.6% of
arrivals. Zimbabwe and Kenya saw substantial growth, with Zimbabwe up 70.8% and
Kenya is up 99% compared to 2022. The Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East
also exhibited strong growth.

Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille credited the recovery to efforts showcasing South
Africa is a welcoming, responsible destination. She noted the reopening of the Chinese
market and resumption of direct flights in 2023 as factors.

Looking ahead, de Lille emphasized the need to reduce barriers to sustain growth. She
thanked visitors for choosing South Africa and South Africans for their hospitality.
