Themba Hospital near White River is now fully open and serving patients again after a
week-long strike by NEHAWU members.
Staff had protested faulty infrastructure like broken lifts that hindered hospital
operations. Last week a lift repair company was brought in, but further damages
requiring imported parts were found. One lift is now fixed, and another is being repaired.
The union and Health Department have agreed to meet on February 13th to continue
addressing dilapidated facilities, staffing, and services. Grass cutters were provided to
improve cleanliness as an interim measure.
The Department announced “The go slow strike has now come to an end. The entire
management of the hospital is now back at work and the public can now fully access
NEHAWU’s actions aimed to motivate fixes to longstanding problems at Themba
Hospital. With some progress made and talks slated, union members have returned to
work so the community can access care.
