Ermelo petrol station shooter was known to victim

Police in Mpumalanga are looking for the gunman who shot and murdered a man at a petrol station in Ermelo and then left after picking up the cartridges.

The victim, 25-year-old Smangaliso Innocent Nkosi, has been identified.

According to police spokeswoman Brig Selvy Mohlala, Nkosi and companions refuelled their cars early on Sunday at the petrol station.

“A man known to them came close to the victim and fired several shots at [him], leaving him dead. The suspect then collected the cartridges and left the scene.”

Police request the public who might help with information on the whereabouts of the suspect to contact Det-Sgt Bheki Masina on 082 373 8389 or the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or send information via the MySAPS app. All information will be treated with confidentiality.”

On social media, CCTV footage of the incident has been extensively shared. Just as the victim is grinning and chatting with companions, a man brandishing a pistol is spotted approaching him quickly. The onlookers run away as he starts shooting.

The gunman continues to fire until his chamber empties even though the victim instantly collapses. After that, he strolls off the property after picking up and pocketing the used cartridges from the filling station’s forecourt.
