Transport Minister, bodyguards robbed on N3

The incident happened early on Monday on the N3 between Vosloorus and Heidelberg.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Department of Transportation stated that spikes left on the road punctured Chikunga’s car’s tires.

According to SAPS service pistols and personal belongings, Chikunga and her bodyguards were robbed, according to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.

“Members involved are receiving necessary support and counselling. The minister has, in the meantime, been provided with alternative resources.

“The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Transport Department spokesperson Collen Msibi confirmed the minister emerged from the incident unscathed.

“Both the minister and her dedicated SAPS protection team emerged from this incident unharmed and safe. Minister Chikunga remains committed to fulfilling her government responsibilities and is deeply grateful for the overwhelming support she has received from her fellow government colleagues and the people of South Africa.”
