A 17-year-old from Shatale and his accomplice allegedly shot and killed Mr Edwin Malele (55), the owner of a tuck store, after an unsuccessful attempt to hijack the vehicle. He was reportedly shot at a four-way stop in Shatale, close to Bushbuckridge, on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at around 2:30 a.m.
The victim, who has a tuck shop in Violetbank, was reportedly driving his Opel Corsa when two suspects suddenly pounced on him as he approached the four-way intersection. The armed suspects allegedly tried to steal his car.
The victim reportedly suffered injuries after being shot in the upper torso during the argument. He was then taken to the hospital, where he later passed away from his wounds.
Further information indicates that after this failed attempt to take the victim’s vehicle, one of the suspects reportedly hijacked another car, a Nissan Light Delivery Vehicle (LDV) bakkie nearby then used it to flee the scene whilst his accomplice fled on foot.
During this time, the owner of the bakkie was reportedly unharmed.
The incident was reported to the Bushbuckridge Police Department, and a case was opened. An investigation was conducted, and the hijacked vehicle was discovered parked near a tavern in Shatale, where the suspect was also arrested and detained. During his arrest, police discovered an unlicensed handgun with its serial numbers removed.
The suspect was charged with murder as well as for hijacking and he is expected to appear at the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court on the 3rd of October 2023 facing the said charges. Police are working collaboratively with Probation Officers as the suspect is underage.
Police are still tracing the second suspect who fled on foot.
