A man was shot and killed in a suspected illegal mining-related attack at Ga-Mahlokwane, outside Burgersfort, on Tuesday.

According to preliminary reports, the victim was travelling in a Ford Ranger with four other men when they were allegedly intercepted by unknown suspects travelling in a taxi and a Mercedes-Benz. The suspects reportedly opened fire on the vehicle, fatally wounding one of the occupants.

The victim was declared dead at the scene, while the four other occupants fled on foot and escaped unharmed.

Police have opened an investigation into the shooting. Initial findings suggest the attack may be linked to an ongoing turf war over illegal mining activities in the area.

Authorities have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
