Communities across Mpumalanga have been urged to unite in the fight against child abuse, neglect and exploitation as Child Protection Week gets underway.

The call was made by Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, who stressed that safeguarding children is a responsibility shared by every member of society.

Speaking during Child Protection Week, Mkhwanazi said children remain among the most vulnerable members of society and require protection from parents, communities, educators and law enforcement agencies.

“The protection of children is not only a legal obligation but a moral duty for every member of society,” he said. “We urge communities to speak out against abuse and report any criminal activities affecting children to law enforcement authorities without delay.”

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga will intensify awareness campaigns, school visits, community engagements and crime-prevention operations aimed at protecting children and strengthening partnerships with communities.

Parents and guardians have also been encouraged to remain vigilant, monitor their children’s movements and online activities, and maintain open communication so that children feel safe reporting abuse or suspicious behaviour.

Mkhwanazi acknowledged the contribution of social workers, teachers, community organisations and faith-based institutions in promoting the rights and well-being of children.

He said collective action was needed to ensure every child grows up in a safe environment free from violence and exploitation.

Members of the public are urged to report crimes against children to their nearest police station or through the SAPS Crime Stop hotline.
