A high-density crime-fighting operation conducted across Mpumalanga has led to multiple arrests, firearm recoveries and the confiscation of drugs and other illegal items.

The operation, known as Operation Shanela II, was carried out by the South African Police Service (SAPS) together with various law enforcement agencies and stakeholders between 7 and 10 May 2026.

According to police, suspects were arrested for a range of offences including murder, attempted murder, rape, robbery, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, dealing in drugs, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, illicit mining and contravention of immigration laws.

Police also executed searches, patrols, roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints and tracing operations in different parts of the province during the operation.

Items confiscated during the operation included firearms, ammunition, counterfeit goods, copper cables, cash and large quantities of drugs.

The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended police members and stakeholders for their efforts in ensuring safer communities.

Mkhwanazi said police would continue intensifying crime-fighting operations across the province in a bid to curb criminal activities.
