A hospital in Bushbuckridge successfully delivered triplets, highlighting the strength of Mpumalanga’s public healthcare system.

The Mpumalanga Department of Health confirmed that the rare, high-risk birth took place on 2 May 2026 at Tintswalo Hospital.

Sindy Phindile Matlhakoane, 39, safely delivered three baby girls within minutes of one another. The first infant arrived at 07:40, weighing 2,470 grams, followed by the second at 07:42, weighing 2,530 grams and the third at 07:44, weighing 1,790 grams.

Triplet pregnancies are considered rare and medically complex, often requiring specialised care due to risks of premature birth. Despite these challenges, all three newborns were delivered safely and are receiving appropriate postnatal care. The mother, now raising six children, expressed gratitude for the support she received.

Hospital management praised the medical team for their expertise and dedication, singling out doctors and maternity staff who handled the delicate procedure.

Mpumalanga Health MEC Sasekani Manzini commended the team, describing the successful delivery as a reflection of the resilience and capability of healthcare workers in the province.

“This achievement shows that even rural facilities can deliver high-quality, specialised care,” she said, adding that the case stands as a proud moment during Workers’ Month.

The department also highlighted another major milestone, revealing that Tintswalo Hospital recorded zero maternal mortality cases between April 2025 and April 2026, underscoring consistent improvements in maternal healthcare.

The department says the successful delivery and clean maternal record strengthen confidence in public healthcare services across rural communities like Bushbuckridge.
