A series of operations targeting illegal mining hotspots around Mpumalanga province, has led to the arrest of 18 suspects and the seizure of illegal mining equipment.

The crackdown, carried out between 21 and 26 April in areas including Pilgrim’s Rest and Sabie, focused on disrupting unlawful mining activities and arresting those involved.

According to the South African Police Service, the first operation at Lows Creek on 21 April resulted in the arrest of five undocumented foreign nationals found in possession of gold-bearing material and equipment.

“Various exhibits, including gold-bearing material and equipment, were seized during the operation,” said police spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe.

Police also confiscated equipment believed to be used in illegal mining, including pendukas, motors, jackhammers and gas cylinders.

The operation extended to Siqobile Township, where more undocumented suspects were arrested for possession of explosives.

A follow-up operation on 23 April in Pilgrim’s Rest resulted in the arrest of eight additional suspects aged between 20 and 57.

Further arrests were made between 24 and 26 April in Pilgrim’s Rest and Sabie, where five more suspects were found with gold-bearing material and equipment. Police also seized hazardous substances, including mercury.

Authorities confirmed that all 18 suspects, aged between 18 and 57, are undocumented foreign nationals and will appear before the Sabie, Pilgrim’s Rest and Barberton Magistrate’s Courts.

Police said investigations are ongoing, with detectives working alongside the Department of Home Affairs to verify the suspects’ immigration status.

“Police remain committed to combating illicit mining activities and ensuring that those involved are brought to justice,” Nonyane-Mpe added.
