The Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, led two law enforcement operations along the busy N4 corridor on Monday as part of the province’s intensified Easter road safety measures.

The first operation took place at the Middelburg Toll Plaza at 09:00, followed by a second at Alkmaar at 14:00. Both operations were part of efforts to ensure that motorists comply with traffic regulations during the Easter travel period.

During the Alkmaar operation, Thomo was joined by the MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, as well as a representative from the City of Mbombela. The multi-disciplinary operations brought together several law enforcement agencies to monitor compliance, particularly within the public transport sector.

Officials conducted inspections on vehicles and monitored driver behaviour while checking roadworthiness and adherence to traffic laws. The operations took place amid high traffic volumes, with many road users travelling towards Gauteng and other provinces following the Easter holiday.

Thomo commended law enforcement officers for their visibility and commitment to road safety during the busy travel period.

“The high traffic volumes we are witnessing require heightened vigilance from both law enforcement and road users. We are encouraged by the level of compliance observed today, but we urge all motorists, especially public transport operators, to remain responsible and patient on the roads,” he said.

The department has urged all road users to prioritise safety, obey traffic regulations and exercise caution as traffic volumes remain high during the Easter period.

Authorities have confirmed that law enforcement operations will continue across Mpumalanga to ensure safer roads for all motorists.
