The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) has called on the public to practise responsible alcohol consumption and gambling during the Easter holidays.

MER Chief Executive Officer Vusi Mtsweni warned that excessive drinking and irresponsible gambling often increase during holiday periods, leading to addiction, financial hardship, domestic conflict and road accidents.

He urged residents to treat gambling strictly as entertainment and not as a way to make money or recover losses, while also reminding motorists not to drink and drive.

The regulator encouraged people to know their limits, avoid using money meant for essentials to gamble, and keep children away from alcohol and gambling environments.

The MER works with partners such as the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation and SANCA Lowveld to promote awareness and support across Mpumalanga.
