Motorists in Mpumalanga are being urged to renew their expired vehicle and driving licences ahead of the busy Easter long weekend.

The call comes from the Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, who warned that failure to comply could result in fines, penalties and legal consequences.

According to the department, nearly 62,000 driving licences and 62,400 vehicle licences are currently due for renewal. Motorists, including fleet operators, are encouraged to act promptly to avoid unnecessary disruptions and ensure smooth travel during the holiday period.

Driving with an invalid licence may lead to criminal and civil litigation, possible rejection of insurance claims and significant financial losses. Authorities stress that keeping vehicle registration details up to date will also prevent complications during routine roadblocks and law enforcement checks.

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has also highlighted progress made through its ongoing Debt Management programme. Since its launch in September 2024, the department has collected more than R20 million out of the R54.4 million outstanding in unpaid vehicle licences. To date, 623 vehicle owners have entered into instalment payment arrangements.
