Illegal firearms and ammunition were seized during a police operation in the Ehlanzeni District, Mpumalanga, as part of Operation Shanela.

The intelligence-driven operation, conducted between 23 and 24 February 2026, involved a multidisciplinary police team working alongside local Farm Watch structures in Calcutta, Acornhoek and Bushbuckridge. Officers carried out stop-and-searches, patrols, and compliance inspections at hotspots including Saselani and Dwarsloop.

During the operation, two men were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. A 30-year-old suspect, Lucas Khosa, and 25-year-old Ripfumelo Kubayi were linked to firearms recovered by police, including multiple 9mm pistols and magazines. One of the seized firearms is suspected to be state-issued.

Court updates:

Ripfumelo Kubayi (25) was granted R1 000 bail by the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court and is expected back in court on 17 March. Meanwhile, Lucas Khosa (30) remains in custody after being remanded and will appear before the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court on 2 March for a formal bail application.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended officers for their swift response and effective coordination. He emphasised that intelligence-led operations and cooperation with community structures such as farm patrols are vital to removing illegal firearms and ensuring safer communities.

“These coordinated efforts strengthen cohesion among law enforcement partners and significantly contribute to proactive policing,” said Mkhwanazi.
