The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) Ward 3 has issued an urgent call for the immediate suspension of classes at all schools in the Mkhuhlu Circuit following severe rainfall and flooding in the area.

In a statement released this week, the ANCYL said heavy rains have caused significant damage to infrastructure, with several low-lying areas submerged. Roads, bridges and key access routes to schools have been affected, placing learners and educators at serious risk.

“The safety, health and well-being of our learners must come first,” the organisation said, stressing that no compromise should be made when it comes to protecting children from potential danger.

The ANCYL urged relevant authorities to act swiftly to assess the damage, repair affected infrastructure and implement proper safety measures before schools resume. It also called on parents, school management teams and government departments to work together to ensure learners are protected during the ongoing adverse weather conditions.

“Our children’s lives matter more than anything,” the statement read.

The call comes as several communities in the region continue to experience disruptions caused by flooding, with residents reporting difficulties in travelling and accessing essential services.
