December 17, 2025Unlicensed Firearms Seized in Kriel
Three suspects were arrested in the Kriel area on Tuesday, 16 December 2025, for possession of unlicensed firearms during an intelligence-driven police operation.
The arrests were made as part of Operation Safer Festive Season, led by specialised multidisciplinary teams targeting high-crime areas to prevent and combat criminal activity during the busy holiday period.
Police recovered two unlicensed firearms and ammunition during the operation. The seized items include a 9mm Norinco Star pistol with a filed serial number and six live rounds of ammunition, as well as a Baby Browning pistol without a magazine or ammunition.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Kriel Magistrate’s Court soon, where they will face charges related to the possession of unlicensed firearms.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, said the success of the operation demonstrates police commitment to removing illegal firearms from communities.
He further urged community members to work closely with law enforcement to help create a safer and more secure environment, particularly during the festive season when crime levels often increase.
