South Africa and Zimbabwe have taken a significant step towards deepening regional cooperation following the signing of a bilateral agreement in the field of social development. The agreement was signed in Harare, where South Africa’s Minister of Social Development, Nokuzola Sisisi Tolashe, emphasised the urgent need for African countries to work together to address shared socio-economic challenges.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Tolashe highlighted that issues such as poverty, inequality, unemployment, substance abuse and the vulnerability of children and older persons continue to affect many African societies in similar ways. She stressed that these challenges cannot be effectively addressed in isolation and require coordinated regional responses rooted in solidarity and mutual support.

The cooperation agreement aims to strengthen collaboration between the two countries in areas including social protection, child welfare, services for persons with disabilities, support for older persons and interventions to combat substance abuse. It also promotes the exchange of best practices, capacity-building for social service professionals and joint planning to improve the delivery of social development programmes.

Both governments acknowledged the importance of harmonising policies and working together to support vulnerable communities, particularly in border regions where social challenges often overlap. The agreement provides a structured framework for ongoing engagement, monitoring and evaluation to ensure that commitments translate into tangible benefits for citizens.

The partnership reflects a broader vision of regional integration and collective action within Southern Africa. By pooling resources, sharing knowledge and aligning strategies, South Africa and Zimbabwe aim to strengthen social cohesion and contribute to inclusive development that leaves no one behind.

Minister Tolashe reiterated that cooperation among African nations is not only desirable but necessary to build resilient societies and improve the quality of life for present and future generations. The agreement signals a renewed commitment to unity, shared responsibility and people-centred development across the region.
