Police in Nelspruit have launched a manhunt following the discovery of two women’s bodies at a house in Kamagugu on Tuesday, 16 December.

According to a police report, officers were alerted at about 16:30 after neighbours became concerned about a foul smell and an unusual number of flies around a locked house. Attempts to contact the occupants by phone were unsuccessful, prompting residents to call the police.

On arrival, police found no visible signs of forced entry. Mbombela Disaster Management was called in to assist with unlocking the house. Once inside, officers discovered that the house appeared to have been ransacked.

Two lifeless bodies were found inside the house. The first victim was identified by her family as Ms Eunice Mahlodi (64), whose body was found half naked. The second victim was identified as Ms Eugenia Dineo Masuku (20). Masuku’s body was discovered half naked in her bedroom, with both hands tied with cables. A cable was also found around her neck, leading police to suspect that she may have been strangled. Blood stains were observed in the bedroom.

Emergency Services personnel who attended the scene certified both women dead. Police said the bodies were found in the early stages of decomposition. It is further suspected that items, including cellphones, may have been stolen from the house.

A case of double murder has been opened, and a specialised investigation team has been established under the leadership of the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi. A 72-hour plan involving all relevant role players has been activated to investigate the incident.

Major General Mkhwanazi said the assembled team is working around the clock to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
