As South Africans gear up for the festive season, the National Gambling Board (NGB) has issued a strong warning about the rise in illegal online gambling platforms. The board urges consumers to gamble responsibly and seek help early if they notice signs of problem gambling.

Illegal online gambling, including offshore websites and unlicensed betting apps, remains a serious risk. Such platforms often target players via social media, WhatsApp, SMS, or influencer marketing, appearing legitimate while offering no legal protection. Participating can result in criminal charges, fines, or forfeited winnings. Only operators displaying a valid provincial licence are authorised to provide gambling services in South Africa.

Acting NGB CEO Lungile Dukwana stressed that the festive season can increase financial and emotional pressures, potentially driving risky gambling behaviour. “Problem gambling can affect anyone, regardless of age or income. Early intervention is crucial to prevent financial loss, broken relationships, or mental-health issues,” he said.

Warning signs of gambling problems include spending more time and money than intended, chasing losses, borrowing money, neglecting responsibilities, or using gambling as an escape from stress. The NGB advises families and communities to remain vigilant.
