Community Health Workers (CHWs) across Mpumalanga erupted in joy on Monday as the MEC for Health, Sasekani Manzini, officially confirmed their permanent employment with the provincial Department of Health. The announcement was made on 1 December 2025 during a ceremony at the Rob Ferreira Tertiary Hospital Auditorium, held under the theme “Enhancing Community Health Services – The Resolution for Community Health Workers.” The theme reflects government’s commitment to recognising, professionalising and strengthening the vital work done by CHWs at community level.

This milestone follows an implementation agreement signed on 25 November 2025 between the National Department of Health and NEHAWU. The agreement confirms that eligible CHWs will be appointed at salary level 2, effective from 1 September 2025. Importantly, the appointments will not require adherence to Regulation 65(1) of the Public Service Regulations, which usually obliges the advertising of vacant posts. This allows for a smooth and direct transition for qualifying workers.

CHWs without Grade 12 will remain on contract but will receive a R1 000 increase to their monthly stipend, ensuring that they benefit from the reforms. By 31 January 2026, a “Token of Appreciation” will also be introduced for CHWs older than 65, acknowledging their years of service. Of the 5 224 CHWs in Mpumalanga, 1 624 have matric while 3 600 do not.

Addressing the crowd, MEC Manzini praised the workers’ dedication. “We are here to confirm our commitment. You are now permanent employees of the department, with all the benefits of public servants. You deserve it. You were at the forefront in the fight against Covid-19, you brought health services to the doorsteps of our communities, and you continue to serve through campaigns such as Close the Gap and the immunisation catch-up programme.”

Following the ceremony, the MEC led a World AIDS Day build-up activity, conducting HIV/AIDS awareness in the Outpatient Department and the Dental Unit. She was joined by Ehlanzeni District Municipality Speaker, Councillor Renias Khumalo, along with organised labour.
