Social Development DG Suspended Amid Appointment Scandal

The Department of Social Development is facing renewed controversy following the suspension of its Director-General, Peter Netshipale. He is accused of gross dishonesty and bringing the department into disrepute.

Netshipale’s suspension relates to the signing of a five-year employment contract, despite the Cabinet having only approved a one-year tenure. His contract was later amended after Minister Sisisi Tolashe initially described the matter as a clerical error when addressing Parliament last week.

The situation has since escalated, with Tolashe charging Netshipale not only for the contract discrepancy but also for failing to properly oversee appointments in her office. These appointments have attracted negative publicity, including the case of a 22-year-old chief of staff accused of falsifying her CV. Allegations have also surfaced around a special advisor allegedly receiving a second salary from another government department.

Netshipale, who is due to reach retirement age next year, has been given until Monday to respond to the charges.

The chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Social Development, Bridget Masango, has indicated that Minister Tolashe may be called back to explain the sudden shift in her position and the mounting allegations.
