Bushbuckridge Local Municipality will host the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature’s flagship programme, Taking Legislature to the People, from 15 to 19 September. The initiative is designed to strengthen democracy by creating direct engagement between communities and lawmakers on issues that affect daily life.

The programme is widely regarded as an important effort to make provincial governance more accessible and accountable. It allows residents to raise their concerns in person, while also allowing legislators to witness challenges on the ground.

For many community members, however, the concept remains unfamiliar. Resident Maria Mokoena admitted: “I have heard about this programme, but I do not really understand what it is about. I think it’s important that people like me come and see for ourselves what it means.”

Others have expressed hope that the initiative will deliver meaningful change. Sipho Nkuna said, “This is the chance we have been waiting for. At last, we can tell the legislature about our struggles with water, jobs and housing. We want them to hear us, not just read reports.”

Over the five-day programme, a variety of activities will take place. These include public hearings, accountability sessions, and site visits to schools, clinics and community centres. Legislators are expected to follow up on commitments made in previous years, ensuring that progress is being tracked and reported back.

Officials have stressed that the event is not ceremonial. Instead, it is a working session that feeds directly into oversight processes and policy decisions.

As Bushbuckridge prepares for this landmark gathering, the focus is firmly on making democracy tangible – ensuring it is not confined to the walls of parliament but experienced in the heart of the community.
