A mosquito bites human hand.
Debunking the sweet blood myth
Many believe mosquitoes prefer people with “sweet blood,” but science shows otherwise. Their biting habits are driven by biology and environment, not sweetness.
Mosquitoes are strongly attracted to carbon dioxide, which humans exhale with every breath. People who breathe out more—such as adults or those who have been exercising—are often bitten more frequently. Body odour also plays a role. Natural skin chemicals, influenced by genetics and bacteria, can act as signals, while sweat after physical activity heightens the risk.
Blood type adds another factor: research suggests people with Type O blood are more prone to bites than those with Type A or B. Clothing choices matter too, as dark colours like black or navy make individuals stand out more to mosquitoes.
So, the next time you find yourself bitten more than others, remember it is not about “sweet blood” but science, environment, and chance.
