Arbor Day 2025 was celebrated with a clear message of unity, environmental protection, and action against climate change.

The event, hosted at Oakley in the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, brought together community members, traditional leaders, and government departments to plant trees, vegetables, and restore the local environment.

As part of the Legacy Programme, 275 spekboom trees were planted on the day. Widely recognised for its ability to absorb carbon dioxide, spekboom is being promoted as a natural solution to climate change. The programme has set a wider target of planting 1,500 trees and plants before it concludes.

In addition to trees, vegetables such as spinach and beetroot were planted, supporting food security initiatives in the community. The Department of Forestry donated mango and marula trees, which will provide shade and fruit for future generations.

The day also included a clean-up campaign, symbolising a renewed commitment to keeping the environment clean and green.

The Department of Agriculture reminded residents that these efforts form part of the national response to climate change. At the same time, President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africans to plant one million trees across the country on Heritage Day, 24 September 2025.

Traditional councils pledged their full support, stating: “We are standing firmly behind this programme and will continue to protect the crops and trees planted for the benefit of our people.”

Arbor Day is not only about planting trees but also about building a sustainable future. With each tree and crop planted in Bushbuckridge, the community is making strides towards food security, biodiversity, and climate resilience.
