A major breakthrough has been made in the murder investigation of popular musician Oupa John Sefoka, widely known as DJ Sumbody, who was tragically gunned down in November 2022. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the arrest of four men in connection with the crime.
The arrests were carried out in Gauteng on, 21 July 2025, and include three alleged hitmen and one individual suspected of orchestrating the murder. The men, aged between 45 and 60, are currently in police custody and are expected to appear in court soon. They are facing multiple charges, including murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, praised the investigative teams for their commitment and coordination. The investigation was led by the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, working closely with the SAPS Political Killings Task Team.
“This is a significant breakthrough in a case that shocked the nation,” said General Masemola. “The teams involved have demonstrated exceptional commitment by tirelessly piecing together evidence for more than two years. Their hard work has resulted in these critical arrests and brings us a step closer to justice.”
According to a police statement, the firearm allegedly used in the fatal shooting of DJ Sumbody has been recovered and has been positively linked to other murder cases currently under investigation. This discovery has opened further avenues of inquiry into related organised crime activities in the province.
The late DJ Sumbody, known for hit songs such as “Monate Mpolaye,” was a beloved figure in South Africa’s music industry. His untimely death at the age of 38 sent shockwaves through the entertainment community and prompted nationwide calls for accountability and justice.
General Masemola expressed hope that this development will offer some closure to Sefoka’s family, fans, and fellow artists. “Our thoughts remain with the family during this difficult time. We will continue to pursue justice relentlessly,” he added.
The SAPS also reiterated its commitment to dismantling criminal syndicates involved in targeted killings, particularly those affecting public figures, political leaders, and prominent community members.
Members of the public with further information that could assist with the ongoing investigation are encouraged to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or via the MYSAPS mobile app.
As the suspects prepare to face court, South Africans watch with interest, hopeful that justice will be served for DJ Sumbody and others affected by violent crime.
