Police arrested a 30-year-old man for dealing in dagga after uncovering a hidden stash during a routine search at the border crossing between South Africa and the Kingdom of Eswatini.

According to police reports, officers stopped and searched an Isuzu bakkie towing a trailer. The suspect claimed to be transporting an empty crate, attempting to conceal his illegal cargo.

Upon closer inspection, officers discovered an unusual compartment underneath the trailer. Inside, they found 21 rolls of compressed dagga, weighing 61.7 kilograms, with an estimated street value of R400,000.

The vehicle was seized for further investigation, and the suspect is set to appear before the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on 10 July 2025 on charges of dealing in dagga.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi praised the officers at the port of entry for their vigilance and dedication.

“This arrest is the result of disciplined and thorough police work. Our members remain committed to stopping criminal activities at our borders.”
