The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has welcomed the 14-year prison sentence handed down to Philip Mfana Masuku (62) for rhino poaching in the Kruger National Park.

Masuku was sentenced by the Skukuza Regional Court on 05 June 2025 after being convicted on multiple charges, including trespassing in a national park, illegal hunting of two white rhinos, conspiracy to commit a crime, and possession of dangerous weapons. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The court heard that on 17 February 2019, at approximately the Kruger National Park’s Technical Manager detected movement in the Pretoriuskop section, suspected to be poachers. Field Rangers were immediately dispatched after being notified by the Section Ranger.

During the operation, Rangers picked up three fresh sets of footprints and began tracking the suspects. Hours later, three men were spotted sitting along Voortrekker Road. As Rangers approached, two suspects escaped, while the third later identified as Masuku was apprehended.

Masuku was found in possession of four rhino horns, two knives, and other suspicious items. The incident was reported to the Skukuza Police Station, and Masuku was formally charged.

Masuku initially appeared at the Bushbuckridge District Court, where he was granted bail. However, after his case was transferred to Skukuza Regional Court, he absconded from attending proceedings, resulting in a warrant of arrest.

A trace operation led to his rearrest. During this time, he attempted to secure bail again, but his application was denied after it was discovered that he submitted a fraudulent medical certificate, confirmed through police investigation.

Major General Mkhwanazi praised the Field Rangers, investigating officers, prosecutors, and the judiciary for their coordinated effort in ensuring justice.

“This sentence sends a strong message that poaching will not be tolerated. We remain committed to protecting our wildlife heritage,” he said.
