McDonald’s opens its doors to the public, offering a behind-the-scenes look at food prep, hygiene, and app rewards as it nears 30 years in South Africa.
On 22 May, McDonald’s held an Open Door launch event at Hazyview aimed at educating customers about what happens behind the scenes at their restaurants.
Founded by Ray Kroc, McDonald’s has been a household name for 70 years worldwide. In South Africa, the fast-food giant will be celebrating 30 years in November 2025.
The Open Door initiative offers customers a unique opportunity to see how their food is prepared — from the hot and cold food stations to the fresh produce areas. It also showcases the strict hygiene practices and teamwork that keep the restaurants running smoothly.
“We want to show our customers what goes into making their meals — how we prepare the food, maintain hygiene, and ensure quality,” said a McDonald’s representative at the event.

Customers are encouraged to download the McDonald’s app, where first-time users receive a free snack. Simply choose your nearest store in the app, redeem your snack, and start collecting points with every purchase R1. These points can later be used to score free meals.
