Nine Foreign Nationals Arrested in Mpumalanga

Nine foreign nationals arrested in Barberton for immigration violations during Operation Vala Umgodi.

Nine suspects, aged between 21 and 43, were arrested by the Proactive Team on 1 May 2025, during Operation Vala Umgodi in Mpumalanga. The operation, which continues to target illegal mining and other criminal activities across the province, is making noticeable progress in curbing lawlessness.

The arrests took place during a stop-and-search operation along the R38 Road near Barberton. All nine suspects were identified as foreign nationals who failed to provide legal documentation allowing them to reside or work in South Africa. As a result, they were charged for contravening the Immigration Act of South Africa.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on 2 May 2025.

During the operation, law enforcement officers thoroughly checked vehicles and individuals for illegal items and activities. While no dangerous goods were found in this particular stop, the arrests underscore the ongoing challenges authorities face in tackling undocumented migration and illegal economic activity in the region.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the officers involved. He expressed his gratitude for their dedication and vigilance in maintaining law and order.

“The hard work and commitment shown by our members under Operation Vala Umgodi are commendable. Their efforts are producing tangible results that enhance public safety and uphold the rule of law in our communities,” said Major General Mkhwanazi.

Operation Vala Umgodi has been rolled out across various hotspots in Mpumalanga and continues to disrupt illegal operations, including mining, contraband trade, and immigration violations. The SAPS urges the public to cooperate with ongoing operations and to report suspicious activities to their nearest police station.
