Sapu Urges Police to Embrace Fitness for Better Crime Fighting
The South African Policing Union (Sapu) in Hazyview has launched a health and fitness initiative aimed at encouraging law enforcement officers to adopt healthier lifestyles in order to meet the demanding physical and mental challenges of their daily duties.
Sapu’s provincial deputy chairperson, Jacky Hlongwane, spearheaded the campaign during the weekly Wednesday sports day held in the Hazyview policing area. The initiative emphasizes the importance of regular physical activity among police officers to help them remain in peak condition.
“We started this programme because we want our officers to be mentally and physically fit. Their jobs are demanding, and without proper fitness, they may struggle to effectively deal with aggressive criminals or high-stress situations,” Hlongwane explained.
He encouraged officers to take their health seriously and continue exercising even during their off-duty hours. “Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not only about being strong physically, but also mentally sharp. We believe these sessions will enhance their overall performance on the job,” he added.
According to Hlongwane, the Wednesday workout sessions are structured to ensure that police station operations are not disrupted. Officers rotate shifts, allowing some to participate in the workouts while others remain on duty. “We urge all SAPS members to engage in daily exercise and use the Wednesday sports day to form training groups. What started as just five officers has now grown to over 100 members participating regularly,” he said proudly.
Currently, for safety and logistical reasons, only SAPS members are allowed to join the fitness group. The officers are split into two teams: one group uses the R536 route (Sabie Road) and the other the R538 towards Phabeni Gate for their workouts.
Hlongwane concluded by encouraging all police officers across Mpumalanga to get involved, noting that staying active not only boosts health but also helps foster discipline and camaraderie within the force.
