A 36-year-old woman was arrested on 23 March 2025 in connection with illegal mining operations in the Airline area between Ngodwana and Waterval Boven, Mpumalanga. The arrest was made under Operation Vala Umgodi, which aims to clamp down on illicit mining activities across the province.

The suspect was apprehended for contravening the Immigration Act of South Africa, as well as for possession of suspected gold-bearing material and illegal mining equipment.

According to the police, Combat and Proactive Team members responded swiftly after receiving a tip-off about suspected illegal mining in the area. Upon arrival, a man believed to be a spotter was seen fleeing, possibly to alert others involved in the operation. It was during this moment that the female suspect was cornered and arrested while attempting to escape.

Police managed to confiscate a significant quantity of illegal mining equipment during the operation. Items seized included Phendukas (manual gold separators), generators, gas cylinders, and various other tools commonly used in illicit mining operations.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 March 2025, to face charges of possession of gold-bearing material, illegal mining equipment, and contravention of immigration laws.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the officers for their vigilance and prompt action.

“This arrest is another milestone in the continued success of Operation Vala Umgodi. We commend the members for their commitment to ridding our communities of illegal mining, which poses serious risks to public safety, the environment, and the economy,” said Mkhwanazi.

He further encouraged the public to assist law enforcement by reporting any suspicious activities linked to illegal mining through the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111 or via the My SAPS App.
