The Mpumalanga Provincial Police leadership recently handed over 74 new vehicles to various police stations, specialised units, and Community Policing Forums (CPF) in a ceremony held at the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality Banquet Hall in Middelburg.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, said the allocation aims to address concerns raised by communities across the province regarding the police’s inability to respond promptly due to inadequate resources.

MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, officiated the event and welcomed the addition of vehicles as a step forward in the fight against crime. He emphasised that the vehicles would play a vital role in enhancing policing capabilities and strengthening public safety.

“This is a significant milestone in our ongoing effort to build safer communities,” said Macie. “We encourage officers to make effective use of these resources to address all categories of crime, including hijackings, in collaboration with other agencies such as the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).”

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the support from MEC Macie’s office. He reaffirmed the police management’s commitment to ensuring officers are well-equipped to protect the public and maintain law and order.

“The provision of these vehicles is a clear indication of our commitment to service delivery and efficient policing,” said Mkhwanazi. “We will continue to strengthen our partnerships to combat crime at all levels.”

The newly allocated vehicles will be used in crime prevention operations, patrolling, and community engagement programmes across the province. Police stations in rural and high-crime areas are expected to benefit significantly from the additional fleet.

Brigadier Mdhluli added that all recipients expressed sincere appreciation and pledged to use the vehicles responsibly. “They are determined to maintain these resources and use them to serve the public with pride and diligence,” he said.

The SAPS and CPF reaffirmed their ongoing collaboration to bolster community safety initiatives and improve public trust in law enforcement.

As crime continues to evolve, stakeholders agree that equipping officers with the right tools and fostering strong community partnerships is essential to keeping Mpumalanga’s residents safe.
