Ramaphosa Condemns Afriforum, Solidarity’s US Visits
President Cyril Ramaphosa has criticized Afriforum and Solidarity for their highly publicized visits to the United States, accusing the lobby groups of conspiring with foreign powers to undermine South Africa’s sovereignty.
While condemning their actions, Ramaphosa emphasized that South Africa is not closing the door on partnerships with the US. He reiterated the country’s commitment to dialogue and maintaining a strong relationship with Washington.
Ramaphosa addressed written questions in the National Assembly on 11 March, where he answered six important questions posed by members of parliament. These questions focused on key national issues, including South Africa’s infrastructure development, industrialization efforts, inequality, relations with the US, hostilities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), misinformation, and the need for a more professional public sector.
The President reaffirmed that South Africa values its partnership with the US and remains a reliable trading partner. However, he also warned that should South Africa lose tariff-free access to US markets, the country would seek alternative export opportunities.
On the DRC, Ramaphosa noted that the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is scheduled to hold a summit on Thursday to address the security situation. A key topic will be the withdrawal of South Africa’s troops from the DRC as part of a broader SADC mission.
