The fate of more than four million elderly beneficiaries remains uncertain as April 2025 approaches. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has yet to announce official details regarding the Older Person Grant, including payment dates and annual increases. With only three weeks until disbursement, pensioners are left in the dark.

Adding to their woes is the ongoing SASSA/Postbank card migration crisis. Of the three million affected beneficiaries, only 1.2 million have successfully transitioned to the new system. A parliamentary committee recently admitted that meeting the March 20 deadline is “impossible.” Despite this, SASSA insists that while old cards will soon be invalid, grant payments will proceed. However, many beneficiaries will struggle to access funds as they normally would. Alternative withdrawal methods will be available at SA Post Office branches, though this presents challenges for those in rural areas.

To make matters worse, uncertainty surrounds the amount pensioners will receive in April. The last confirmed grant payments on March 4 saw recipients aged 60–74 receive R2 190, while those over 75 received R2 210. With no official communication on increases, pensioners are left to speculate.

Much depends on Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s upcoming budget speech. However, political discord further complicates the situation. The Cabinet announced approval of the revised budget, yet DA leader John Steenhuisen contradicted this, stating no final agreement had been reached.

What We Know About SASSA Grants
Applications can take over three months, but successful applicants will receive backdated payments.
Grants are only available to residents aged 60+ and are means-tested.
All applications must be submitted in person at a SASSA branch.
Due to long queues, booking an appointment online is recommended.
Required Documents for Applications
Applicants must bring:

Proof of marital status
Utility bill (not older than three months)
Bar-coded ID (smart card or green booklet)
Proof of income and asset valuation
Declaration of private pension (if applicable)
Three months’ certified bank statements
UIF membership book or discharge certificate
Will, liquidation, and distribution accounts if a spouse passed away in the last five years
A trusted person may assist an applicant with a doctor’s letter and certified documents.

Income and Asset Limits for Eligibility
Single: Maximum R8 070/month (R96 840/year), assets below R1 372 800
Married: Maximum R16 140/month (R193 680/year), assets below R2 745 600
Denied applicants have 90 days to appeal with the Department of Social Development. SASSA reserves the right to review grants with three months’ prior notice.
