Operation Vala Umgodi Cracks Down on Illegal Miners in Mpumalanga

Operation Vala Umgodi 33 Suspected Illegal Miners Arrested in Mpumalanga Crackdown

Law enforcement officials deployed in Mpumalanga successfully carried out Operation Vala Umgodi, leading to the arrest of 33 alleged illegal immigrants, aged between 18 and 45. The suspects appeared before the Graskop Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 3 March 2025.

The arrests took place on Sunday, 2 March 2025, in Pilgrim’s Rest, where members of Combat, Proactive Environments of the Police, and Phoenix Security conducted a disruptive operation. During the raid, officers discovered that the foreign nationals were in possession of mining equipment, suggesting involvement in illegal mining activities.

Among the arrested individuals, five are women and 28 are men. Law enforcement confiscated various items, including:

  • 11 phendukas (gold-processing equipment)
  • 4 generators
  • 7 gas cylinders
  • A 1,000-litre water tank
  • 2 motors
  • 2 cutting torches
  • A water pump, spade, shovel, electrical cables, jackhammer, and a pilot gun

Authorities believe these tools were being used for illegal mining operations.

Court Proceedings and Investigations

During their court appearance, the case was postponed to 7 March, 10 March, and 13 March 2025. The postponements allow for further investigation, including age verification, and also help prevent overcrowding in court.

Police Commitment to Combat Illegal Mining

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi emphasized that law enforcement agencies will maintain a strong presence in areas where illegal mining is rampant. He assured the public that Operation Vala Umgodi will continue its mission to curb illegal mining and protect South Africa’s resources.
