2025 sona
South Africans eagerly await President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) tomorrow evening, the first under the seventh administration’s Government of National Unity (GNU). The address will outline the nation’s roadmap amid domestic and global challenges.
Economic Outlook & G20 Presidency
The President is expected to discuss South Africa’s hosting of the G20 Summit in November, marking the first time the event will be held on African soil. Economic recovery will also be a focal point, with the country achieving its first primary budget surplus in 15 years. The IMF projects GDP growth to rise from 0.8% in 2024 to 1.5% in 2025, aided by improved electricity generation and investor confidence.
Key Legislation & Reforms
The President will highlight key legislative advancements, including the Expropriation Bill, which modernizes land expropriation laws, and the Employment Equity Amendment Act, reducing compliance burdens for small businesses. The Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Act also aims to transform the education system.
Crime & Safety Initiatives
SAPS has deployed 20,000 new constables, with operations like Shanela and Vala Umgodi tackling crime and illegal mining. The latest crime statistics show a decline in serious crimes, including murder, robbery, and carjacking.
Energy & Load Shedding Progress
Despite recent Stage 3 load shedding, Eskom achieved a record 300 consecutive days without power cuts, thanks to the Energy Action Plan and its Generation Recovery Plan.
South Africa’s ICJ Case Against Israel
The government remains firm in its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), underscoring its commitment to international law.
A Call for National Unity
In his previous address, President Ramaphosa urged South Africans to work together like “weaver birds,” emphasizing cooperation and resilience.
As the nation tunes on 6 February 2025, all eyes will be on the President to chart South Africa’s path forward.
