Teaching and learning at Majika Primary School in KaMajika Village were disrupted on February 3 after an alarming incident involving young learners.
According to reports, a 14-year-old boy was allegedly caught assaulting a 10-year-old boy in the school toilets. Two other Grade Three learners, aged between nine and 11, reportedly witnessed the incident but were then forced to participate under threats from the older boy.
When the matter was brought to the school principal, the 14-year-old’s mother was called for a meeting. She allegedly claimed her son had been a victim of similar abuse in the past, saying his actions were driven by past trauma.
A concerned parent expressed outrage, stating, “This child needs professional help. If he has been hurt before, that does not justify harming others. This is unacceptable.”
The school governing body, teachers, and parents held a meeting, leading to the 14-year-old being transferred to another school.
Authorities and Education Department Respond
Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, confirmed that a case has been opened at Hazyview Police Station and that a probation officer has been assigned since the suspect is a minor.
Meanwhile, Provincial Education Department spokesperson Gerald Sambo strongly condemned the incident, urging parents and educators to instill discipline and ensure children’s safety.
“Schools must be safe spaces for learning. We urge parents, teachers, and communities to guide children in making responsible choices and respecting one another,” Sambo said.
Authorities continue investigating the matter to ensure justice is served and necessary interventions are put in place.
