A bomb threat led to the evacuation of Nelspruit police station on January 31 after a private security company reported that an explosive device had been planted inside the building.
According to provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the bomb threat was received by a member of the explosives unit from a Polsec security officer at 7:00 PM.
“All role players, including the K9 unit, were called to the station. Officers were evacuated, and police services were temporarily disrupted while a thorough search was conducted,” said Ndubane.
Police explosives experts and K9 units carried out an extensive sweep of the premises, but no explosive device was found. Authorities are now investigating the origin of the threat.
Following the search, normal operations resumed at the Nelspruit police station.
This incident comes months after a similar bomb threat disrupted the Durban Magistrate’s Court in July last year. At the time, a caller warned that a bomb would detonate at 10:30 AM, prompting evacuations. The Public Servants Association (PSA) later demanded a full safety report from the police.
Authorities urge anyone with information regarding the Nelspruit bomb threat to contact Crime Stop at 08600 1011 or report via the My SAPS app.
