As the 2025 academic year begins, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has called on parents, schools, and communities to take proactive steps in monitoring the food learners consume to prevent food poisoning incidents, which were widespread in 2024.
Last year, Mpumalanga recorded over 50 food poisoning cases among school learners, often linked to snacks purchased from local vendors.
In October 2024, 24 learners from Enzani Primary School in Matsulu were hospitalized with stomach pains and vomiting after consuming snacks from spaza shops. Similarly, 21 learners at Marhagi Secondary School in Verena were treated for food poisoning after eating atchaar bought from vendors near the school.
To prevent a repeat of these incidents, the DBE has issued guidelines urging parents and schools to ensure food safety. A notice on social media stated:
“Check the food your children buy from vendors. Help create a safety net around our schools.”
The DBE emphasized five key hygiene practices for parents:
- Keep clean.
- Separate raw and cooked food.
- Cook food thoroughly.
- Store food at safe temperatures.
- Use safe water and fresh ingredients.
School management teams, governing bodies, and principals have also been advised to monitor the food sold on or near school premises. The DBE reiterated that a safe school environment is essential for academic success.
Gerald Sambo, spokesperson for the Department of Education, stressed the importance of community involvement in ensuring food safety:
“Basic hygiene practices, such as handwashing after using restrooms or before eating, must be strictly adhered to at all times. Everyone must play a meaningful role and not take such matters for granted.”
The DBE’s message is clear: vigilance and collaboration are crucial to protecting learners’ health and fostering a safe, productive school environment.
