Suspected Poacher Killed by Hippo in Kruger

The body of a suspected poacher was discovered near Pretoriuskop in Kruger National Park on January 20. A tourist found the body on the side of the road and promptly alerted park authorities, according to Kruger spokesperson Isaac Phaahla.

“Initial reports suggest that three individuals illegally entered the park on the night of January 19, likely intending to commit a crime,” Phaahla said. “They were attacked by a hippo, resulting in fatal injuries to one suspect. The other two reportedly carried the deceased’s body to a nearby road before fleeing.”

The tourist who found the body covered it and notified the section ranger, who called law enforcement and pathologists to the scene.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an investigation into the incident. Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed they are probing an inquest of murder and encouraged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or use the My SAPS app.

Phaahla also urged people to avoid sharing photos of the body on social media, stressing that it would be insensitive and could hinder investigations.

Additionally, park management reiterated its warning against illegal entry into the Kruger National Park, emphasizing the dangers posed by wild animals and the risk of arrest by rangers and security personnel.
